COUNTYWIDE SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a key strategy of the Sonoma County Vision Zero Action Plan that prioritizes the safety and comfort of school neighborhood streets, with an emphasis on safety for students and families using active mobility (e.g. walking, bicycling, scootering) to travel to and from school. The Sonoma County Transportation Authority (SCTA), in partnership with the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition (SCBC), is leading an initiative to expand its current SRTS education, active transportation encouragement, site visit and data collection activities to include infrastructure improvement planning for school neighborhoods of highest need. This expanded SRTS scope, funded by a 2023 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, brings together SCTA, school districts, school communities, city staff, and community-based organizations to create safer and healthier school zones in ten county jurisdictions.

Countywide Safe Routes to School

As part of the countywide SRTS efforts, spring 2025 through spring 2027, SCTA is will deliver the following:

Countywide SRTS School Prioritization: a transparent, data-driven rank ordering of the county schools based on need to provide a “roadmap” for directing SRTS activities and partners to school neighborhoods of highest safety, health, and climate mitigation needs.
SRTS Plans: a school community-centered planning process that couples on-site neighborhood walks (SRTS Site Assessments) and/or workshopping with staff, parents, and students to identify obstacles and challenges to walking and cycling to/from school. Community engagement informs our team’s engineering safety / active transportation treatments and design recommendations for school neighborhood streets. Recommendations for active transportation safety education and encouragement activities will also be assessed for 10 – 15 of the county’s schools of highest need.
Active Mobility Safety Education and Skills Training: an enhanced resource of active mobility education/encouragement activities that include programs facilitated by SCBC and online materials to support school administration, educators, parents or communities.

SRTS Site Assessments

Site Assessments include a school neighborhood walk and workshop to solicit input on the challenges and obstacles to safe active transportation use to/from school, and informs the engineering recommendations of each school’s infrastructure improvement plan.
